UF AWMA'S LAST MEETING FOR SPRING 2012
UF AWMA will have the last general body meeting of the year on April 26th at 5:30 PM in 213 Black Hall. Next year's president and executive board will be elected. All are welcome to come!

RESULTS OF THE 14TH ANNUAL EES POSTER SYMPOSIUM
The 14th Annual EES Poster symposium, hosted by UF AWMA, was held on March 28th. The winners were:
Graduate
1st Prize ($200): Stephanie Ishii - Behaviour of Reoccuring PARAFAC Components in Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter in Natural and Engineered Systems: A Critical Review
2nd Prize ($150): Brian Damit - Ultra-high Temperature Short-Time Infrared Disinfection of Bioaerosols
3rd Prize ($100): Wesley Oehmig - Exploring Pathways and Limitations to Reuse of Combustion Residuals in Florida
Undergraduate
1st Prize ($100): Elizabeth Gomez - Thermal Inactivation of Bioaerosols during Filtration

14TH ANNUAL EES POSTER SYMPOSIUM, MARCH 28TH AT 6:00 PM
UF AWMA will host the 14th Annual EES Poster symposium on March 28th at 6:00 PM. The symposium will be held in the NEB rotunda. Please come to see all the exciting research done by UF EES and listen to presentations by students!

UF AWMA WILL HOST THE UNIFIED MEETING IN FEBRUARY
The UF AWMA hosted Unified Meeting will be held at 6:30 PM in 386 NEB. Matt Tribby from Koogler & Associates, Inc will discuss Gainesville air and waste projects.

14th ANNUAL EES POSTER SYMPOSIUM CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The 14th annual EES poster symposium, which is hosted by UF AWMA, will be held in last week of March. The deadline for abstract submission is March 1. To submit an abstract, please fill out the submission form and submit your abstract no later than the deadline. There is an extra 10% bonus for early submissions. More details about the awards and exact time of the symposium would be posted later.

THE FALL UF AWMA FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN POSTPONED
The field trip will be rescheduled to a date in the Spring semester. We look forward to you attending!

- June 2011:
THE UF DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING SCIENCES HAS CLAIMED ANOTHER FIRST PLACE PRIZE!
On Wednesday, June 22, 2011 a four person team took home first place in the Air and Waste Management Association's Environmental Challenge International. Ali Bigger, Jenny Guan, Shaina Kelly, and Paul Stevenson were tasked with proposing a plan to achieve 25% renewable energy use in the United States by 2025. Their plan emphasized public involvement and change at the household and small business level. The project began as a capstone design under Drs. C.Y. Wu and Tim Townsend. This is another great accomplishment for the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida!

- December 2010: UF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS TAKE HOME 1st AND 3rd IN AWMA'S ANNUAL POSTER COMPETITION
Jun Wang and Lin Shou were awarded 1st and 3rd place in the Florida Section Air and Waste Management Association Annual State Conference in Crystal River on October 11, 2010. Jun’s winning poster was entitled Control of hexavalent chromium from stainless steel welding using silica precursor as shielding gas additive , while Lin explored the Development of a Personal Sampler for Evaluating Inorganic Acid Mist Exposure Level . Both Jun and Lin are Ph.D students of Dr. C.Y. Wu.
A team from UF also took home second place in the Environmental Challenge. This years topic explored renewable fuel oil production in Florida.

- October 2009: CONGRATULATIONS TO AWMA PRIZE WINNERS
Seven students from the EES department went to the Florida section's AWMA conference (Oct 4 - 6, 2009). Four of them participated in poster competition, and three participated in Environmental challenge competition. All students won prizes in their respective competitions:
- Undergrad Poster Competition: Gabriel Maul (1st prize)
- Graduate Poster Competition: Shrawan Singh (1st Prize), Danielle Hall (2nd prize) and Yu Wang (3rd Prize)
- Environmental Challenge Competition (EC): Three-member team--Valerie Burkett, Kelly Hodoval and Karamjit Singh--(1st prize)

- July 2009: UF-A&WMA TEAM WINS SECOND PLACE AT
ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE INTERNATIONAL, DETROIT
UF-A&WMA team consisting of four students from Environmental Engineering Sciences department (Danielle Hall, Karamjit Singh, Nathan Topham and Tianyi Chen) competed in the Environmental challenge International competition held in Detroit. It was organized as a part of annual conference of Air & Waste Management Association. Eleven teams from different countries participated in the competition. The students were asked to work out a solution for a real time waste management problem of a city in Michigan. As a consultant, students worked on couple of solutions and came up with the best available technology considering various pros and cons of each technology. In the first round, a detailed proposal was submitted, followed by a poster presentation in the second round. A detailed power point presentation was presented in the final round. UF team finished second overall and were presented a cheque of $4500 as the prize money.

- February 2009: FAWN BERGEN WINS 2009 A&WMA OUTSTANDING YOUNG PROFESSIONAL AWARD
Congratulations to EES alumnus, Fawn Bergen, as the recipient of the 2009 A&WMA Outstanding Young Professional Award! This award recognizes an individual who is pursuing excellence in career and has made a valuable contribution to A&WMA by serving in a leadership position at the local level and/or the international level. To be eligible, a candidate must be a young professional working in the environmental profession, and must be 35 years of age or younger. The award will be presented at the A&WMA annual conference in Detroit, MI at the Honors & Awards Luncheon on June 18, 2009.
- December 2008: FL-A&WMA SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
Scholarships are available from the Florida Section A&WMA. The application can be found HERE and applications are due on February 7th, 2009.
- October 2008: FL-A&WMA CONFERENCE
The FL-A&WMA conference members participated in a student poster competition and the Environmental Challenge. This year's challenge was to design an economically feasible sustainable community. The UF team consisting of Aly Byrne, Danielle Hall and Nate Topham won first place in this competition. In addition, Nate Topham and Qi Zhang won first place prizes in the undergraduate and graduate poster competitions respectively.

- June 2008: UF-A&WMA WINS
BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD
The University of Florida's student chapter of A&WMA won the 1st Place Student Chapter Award for a large university at the 2008 A&WMA National Conference in Portland, Oregon. This is the second consecutive year that the UF A&WMA chapter has won this prestigious award. Congratulations to Ms. Lindsey Riemenschneider, the 2007-2008 UF-A&WMA Student Chapter President; Dr. Wu, the Faculty Advisor and all of the 2007-2008 A&WMA officers and members!
