APALSA History & Introduction

APALSA is an organization of law students interested in the growth of the Asian legal community and in the development of Asian and Asian-American-related legal issues. The University of Florida chapter of APALSA was created in the Fall of 1994. It is one of many APALSA chapters formed under the umbrella of the National Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (NAPALSA). In addition to the annual NAPALSA convention, APALSA organizations often take part in regional conventions and workshops. APALSA organizations also maintain contact with related groups such as the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and NAPABA-affiliated groups.

The U.F. APALSA sponsors several programs here at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Our past events have included a roundtable discussion with Ms. Elizabeth OuYang, an attorney with the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) about the growing participation of Asians and Asian-Americans in the legal community; a Symposium on Hong Kong's Reversion to China; a Symposium on immigration and immigration reform, with an emphasis on the impact in Florida; and a Symposium on Trade and Investment in Asia, with Mr. Charles Toy, General Counsel of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). Other events have included sponsoring Brown Bag lunches with visiting Asian LL.M. students, law school administration, and faculty; conducting workshops for undergraduate students interested in law and other careers; and hosting dinners with a practicing attorney or professor in the State of Florida.

In addition to our events, we offer our law student members access to our outlines, test bank, job book (internships/fellowships/clerkships in the U.S. and abroad), as well as general support throughout their legal education. For undergraduate students interested in law, we provide opportunities to meet with law students, faculty, administrators, and practicing attorneys; access to our LSAT bank, workshops on applying to law school and about different fields of law, information on minority scholarships.

We welcome students of all backgrounds and interests to join us. Our meetings and events are open to all students. Please feel free to e-mail us with your questions, concerns, or comments at the following address: apalsa@grove.ufl.edu.
