Let us know what you're up to! Send an e-mail to aaw@grove.ufl.edu to share your news in the next issue of AAW Update. We hope this section will serve as an opportunity for faculty and professional women to learn about one another's achievements for both networking and congratulatory purposes!

Congratulations to the following individuals for their recent achievements.

Dr. Milagros Peña received a $66,000 grant from the Notre Dame Latino Studies Institute for collaborative work with Dr. Edwin Hernandez of Notre Dame and Dr. Caroline Sotelo-Turner of Arizona State University--Tempe who also are co-investigators on the Hispanic Church Research Initiative. The grant Peña received is part of a larger grant funded by the PEW Charitable Trusts for the Hispanic Church Research Initiative. As Edwin Hernández noted in the proposal to PEW one of the most important characteristics of the Latino community, and arguably its greatest strength, is its deeply rooted religious commitment. Although other racial and ethnic groups also manifest strong religious faith, in the Hispanic community, perhaps because of the relatively weak state of other formal institutions, the church plays an especially critical role. Churches are among the most visible and dynamic institutions in this community, nurturing cultural and civic values and behavior, and inspiring and organizing community involvement, often in distressed urban neighborhoods. Peña will participate in researching the dynamics of Latino and Latina civic engagement via church work and the particular contribution of Latina women in that work.
