Nearly
50 UF faculty and A&P women gathered at the Reitz Union
in September for AAW's fall retreat that kicked off "The
Year of Having It All ... Or at Least One or Two Really Good
Things."
After a breakfast reception, the day's events began with a welcome
from AAW President Carol Kem and a thought-provoking discussion
with Provost David Colburn. Dr. Colburn not only addressed opportunities
available to academic and professional women throughout campus,
but also tackled some of the challenges that the administration
faces as it prepares for devolution. |

Provost David Colburn addressed issues surrounding
UF's transition and answered questions about the representation
of academic and professional women at UF. |
|
Some of
the statistics he brought to light were the fact that four
of the 16 deans and two of the five provosts at UF are women.
When participants questioned the lack of representation of
women on the Strategic Plan Committee, the Provost charged
AAW with acting as a lobbying organization for such issues
and indicated that his office would be willing to respond
to concerns.

Participants
were eager to learn about Qigong Chinese Energy Exercise from
Dr. Barbara Welsh of the Employee Assistance Program.
|
|
Following
the discussion with Dr. Colburn, Dr. Latrelle Jackson of the
UF Counseling Center led a discussion on the "career
balancing act." Other popular sessions included ones
ranging from financial strategies for women to qigong energy
exercise.
AAW sponsors
a range of events--both social and topical--throughout the
academic year. For more information, see the Calendar
