I relaunched Art Junction earlier this month. It has a new design and much more content that was brought over from the @rt room site. I will be retiring the @rt room, which has been up on the Web since 1996, this coming summer. |

I'm once again conducting an Internet Survey for K-12 art teachers regarding
their use of the Internet and other digital technologies
in the classroom and home. The survey will run until the end of January 2006. |

The Fall semester
started this week and I'm busy preparing for classes. One
of the things I've always appreciated about teaching is
that you get to start anew every Fall. With a new colleague,
new students, and some new digital equipment in the art
education area, I'm anxious to see what the year brings.

In
late September 2005, I posted a survey on the Web that was
designed to elicit responses from K-12 art teachers regarding
their use of the Internet and other digital technologies
in the classroom and home. 198 teachers participated in
the survey, which ran from September 30 to November 15,
2005. Read the survey

The
Big6 Art Project from Chapter 8 of my book is featured in
the December 2005 issue of the Big6 Newsletter. Read portions
of my interview with Carrie Lowe in her article “Creating
Information Literacy: A Big6 Art Project (Grades 7 –
12).”
In this project, students apply the Big6
Information Problem Solving Approach to research the life
and work of a notable artist from the past or present. They
then create a new work of art that combines something they
learn from studying their chosen artist’s work with
their own ideas and interests.
You can download a PDF copy of the Big6
Art Project on the ATGI
companion site. |

I'm
frequently asked if there is a shortage of certified art
teachers in Florida. This summer, I decided to do a little
research to see if I could find the answer to this question.
Although not as critical as in some other subject areas,
the shortage of certified art teachers in the State of Florida
is a serious problem.
A 2004 Florida Department of Education
(FDOE) report indicates there were 2,448 art teachers working
in Florida’s public schools in the Fall of 2003. The
FDOE report also projects an annual need of approximately
238 (*) new art teachers in Florida for the next ten years
to address enrollment increases and teacher terminations.
According to a 2003 FDOE report, the most recent data available, public and private
approved teacher education programs in Florida produced
81 art teacher graduates that year—only 34% of the
number of new art teachers required to fill Florida’s
need. The problem is more acute when one considers that
not all these graduates remain in Florida and take available
teaching positions. Regardless, the data clearly shows that
the number of new art teachers needed in Florida exceed
the number of art teacher graduates each year. |
