Dental Hygiene Campaign

The Children’s Dental Hygiene Initiative is a project to provide fluoride treatment to children in the community. Dental supplies in these remote areas are very expensive and difficult to come by. In light of this, we wish to provide fluoride treatment to school children in the area. We want to also provide each child receiving treatment, with a toothbrush and toothpaste in order to offer a continuous form of dental care. Through this project we will be able to highlight the importance of dental hygiene. Recurso hopes to continue supplying the children of this area with toothbrushes and toothpaste on a twice or three times a year basis.

Pre-Natal Care Campaign

Puerto Cabezas, more than most rural areas of the Global South, suffers significantly from particularly high pregnancy rate of 39 percent. Puerto Cabezas has an ingenious facility for high risk women: La Casa Materna, a women's house. This free home to about 20 pregnant women who come from far away villages along the coast. Though this home is close to close to medical care, they are severely lacking in most basic needs. We support the Women’s House by providing informational seminars on the importance of Pre-Natal care, distributing folic acid, and receiving blankets.

School Supplies Drive

Education is one of the greatest tools one can afford a child. In many underdeveloped nations access to education is limited, and when available is often diminished due to lack of supplies. The children of Puerto Cabezas are overall genuinely eager to learn. The majority of students travel by foot for quite a distance; they take with them--each day--their desk chair since the schools don’t have the funding to buy chairs for their pupils. We’re forming partnerships with teachers in Florida to help collect school supplies for the children in Puerto Cabezas.

Water Filters Initiative

Throughout the hurricane season disease and sanitation are major concerns due to unclean water. Frequently there are more illness in the aftermath of a hurricane, due to contamination, than there were injuries caused by the intense winds. With this program we hope to reach out to as many places as possible and help prepare the area for the next hurricane season by setting up water filters in major public venues. In 2007 we set up several filters in areas were unclean water could effect many people, including: the clinic, hospital, and orphanage. We are updated on the progress by our contacts in the town. We hope to expand this in 2008 and, with the assistance of our contacts, set up more filtration centers so that citizens may easily obtain purified water.

Vision and Literacy Program:

This is a new program we have started in 2008 in which we will administer eye exams and outfit members of the Puerto Cabezas community, ranging from children to the elderly, with prescription glasses, as well as age-appropriate reading material. We actively seeking more donations of large numbers glasses to make sure that everyone needing glasses will be offered a pair.

Arts in Medicine:

This also is a new program for the 2008 Trip. Working off the model Arts in Medicine program at Shands hospital at the University of Florida, we will donate both art supplies and creative ideas and energy from trip participants in hopes of fostering an atmosphere of creative expression that will remain around the children long after we are gone. We have chosen to do this project at an advanced children’s hospital in Managua.

La Chureca, Managua Landfill

New to the 2008 Trip is volunteering with general maintenance and new construction of pubic facilities within La Chureca, a Managua city landfill which is home to over 1500 in people. These genuine people are living in utter poverty, they spend their days rummaging though garbage in search of something they can sell or eat.

Medical Supplies Drive and Hospital Visit

According to The World Health Organization, 12 million children die a year from diseases attributed to malnutrition mainly anemia. The resources available to the one hospital that services the entire RAAN region are incredibly limited. The hospital has no major surgery or radiology departments and few supplies in other departments. Our organization is working to support the hospital through a medical supplies drive; however the number of people in need is beyond the scope of our reach. Most important to the drive are iron supplements, vitamins (especially for children), and staff/hospital equipment.

Beyond Service:

Cultural immersion is a major part of this trip as well and we will be sure to take time out to visit parts of Nicaragua, especially in Managua and Viejo Leon. Activities will include visiting art museums, churches, historical sites, hiking, zip-lining, and trekking across Nicaragua’s famous volcanoes.

Another important function of the service trip is for the trip members to gain a better understanding of the close relationship between their widespread poverty and the wealth of more developed nations. The students’ actions in our community speak volumes for what they have learned on the trip. We hope that members of the trip will come back as an inspiration to the people around them and will come back as leaders working towards a better future for our global community.
