Welcome
to the official website of the Black Graduate Student Organization
(BGSO)! BGSO has been active on the campus of the University of
Florida for more than 20 years. It provides a space for graduate
and professional students of African, Caribbean, and African-American
descent to become invloved in and acclimated to a cultural environment
that can often feel homogenous and polarized. BGSO, however, welcomes
students of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and boasts
members who are also completing undergraduate degrees and aspiring
toward graduate studies.
Members encourage
each other to strive for academic excellence, as well as holistic
achievement by becoming active on campus, in the Gainesville community,
and in national and international issues within and beyond the
African Diaspora. In order to achieve these goals, BGSO sponsors
annual programs such as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Awards Celebration, a Graduate Prep workshop
for undergraduate students, and the Writer's Workshop.
Additionally, gives back to the community by participating often
in a number of community
service programs and actvities. Moreover, BGSO plans
a number of regularly scheduled social and cultural activities.
If
you are seeking an opportunity to network with other students on
a personal or professional level, we invite you to join us in our
quest for excellence at the University of Florida. If you would
like to receive additional information about our organization or
be added to our e-mail list, please write us at uf_bgso@yahoo.com.
